SERENA’S LIFE

Meet Our Builder

Meet Our Builder

We've emerged from the decision making process on who will be building our new home.  And getting through it proved to be stressful for both Colin and me.  One morning, we both awoke at 3 a.m. with the decision weighing heavily on our minds.  It's a lot to think about...

My Gypsy Wagon

My Gypsy Wagon

When the journey in our family gypsy wagon came to an end, we settled down in a little shack on the Klamath River in Northern California in a place called Croy Gulch. The gulch was hot and dry and suffering from several years of drought. Rattle snakes ruled the land,...

Refreshment

Refreshment

It was always so quiet in our 40 acre woods and I'd wander off to the cliffs where the wind would blow and I could gaze at all of the succulents growing on the rocks. I'd look down onto the forest below and wonder what was there under that canopy of trees. Then I'd...

Today

Today

This morning dawned with a wispy haze that made the prairie look so romantic.  The color of the day always affects what I choose to wear. I love pink and gray.  Actually, I love pink and anything. Micah eats about 900 bowls of Cheerios to start the day.  I can't...

My Print, AD FC

I have a love for beautiful art and I think it comes from years of watching my parents collecting old prints and paintings. At some point in my teens, they fell in love with Architectural Digest and were so inspired by the homes they saw that they decided to paint our...

Reunited

Reunited

This morning we awoke to our first snow of the season and I was reunited with the snowblower, which I think is one of the greatest inventions ever. It makes life so easy. When I was a little girl, snow meant life was going to be a challenge for a while. Our three mile...

Princess Leia

Growing up, we never had typical halloween costumes. Maybe because we were a hippy family who stood out from the pack anyway. No costumes required. But I was a child of the Seventies and had seen Star Wars.  So, I donned my coolest paisley sundress, threw on my...

Pops

Whenever I get a stomachache, I think back to my Pops and his big strong hands, rubbing my frequent childhood stomachaches away.  He had a way of making everything better, and I was sure he was some sort of superman.  Well, he was actually.  When I discovered a...

IT'S ME, SERENA!

I bounced through the first years of my life in a hippie gypsy wagon, hand-built by my father, wandering the back roads of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. My family eventually settled into a tiny cabin in the woods on property that was once inhabited by Native American Indians.

I spent my childhood days searching for arrowheads, teaching myself to sew on a treadle sewing machine and to bake in a wood-burning stove, with no running water, refrigeration, or electricity in our home. My family lived frugally and early on, inspired by my parent’s thriftiness and style, I gained a knack for thrifty creativity and turning ordinary objects into something useful. And I dreamed of the home I would create for my own family someday.

Now I’m married to my husband, Colin, and our children are all grown. After 24 years of producing The Farm Chicks Vintage & Handmade Fair, I'm spending time visiting other markets around the world. You can watch episodes of Serena Goes to Market here.

I share more about my life story from time to time, here on my blog. You can also find me on Instagram, and Facebook.
