Colin and I just returned from a Viking River Cruise aboard the Viking Mimir through the Netherlands and Belgium. I was a little worried that Colin might go slightly stir-crazy on a river cruise but he (and I!) had a great time! The nice thing is, you can be as active or as relaxed as you want to be, with stops in one or more cities/villages a day, optional tours, and countless opportunities for exploring on your own, if that’s something you enjoy. It’s the first vacation the two of us have taken together alone without the boys since we’ve been married, that lasted more than a few days. The cruise was the absolutely most perfect way to spend our vacation together because it was fun, relaxing, stress-free, super pretty and interesting, and we didn’t ever have to worry about any logistics whatsoever.
We started and ended our river cruise in Amsterdam, on what Viking offers as their Tulips and windmills cruise. It was unseasonably cold, but luckily we had some sunny days thrown in here and there.

IT'S ME, SERENA!
I bounced through the first years of my life in a hippie gypsy wagon, hand-built by my father, wandering the back roads of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. My family eventually settled into a tiny cabin in the woods on property that was once inhabited by Native American Indians.
I spent my childhood days searching for arrowheads, teaching myself to sew on a treadle sewing machine and to bake in a wood-burning stove, with no running water, refrigeration, or electricity in our home. My family lived frugally and early on, inspired by my parent’s thriftiness and style, I gained a knack for thrifty creativity and turning ordinary objects into something useful. And I dreamed of the home I would create for my own family someday.
Now I’m married to my husband, Colin, and our children are all grown. After 24 years of producing The Farm Chicks Vintage & Handmade Fair, I'm spending time visiting other markets around the world. You can watch episodes of Serena Goes to Market here.

Hi, we are booked on the Tulips & Windmills cruise for April 2022.
I’m wondering, if you actually cruise past tulip fields; or, do we have to book a special excursion to see them?
Of course, we will be taking the excursion to the Keukenhof Gardens. But I’m hoping to see those iconic vistas of flowering bulbs in fields.
Any advice you have on this cruise is most welcome! Our 35th wedding anniversary is right in the middle, when we are in Kinderdijk.
