SERENA’S LIFE
My Early Years of Isolation
I used to joke with Colin that I could make soup from stones, and in the early days of our marriage while we he was building his career and I was leaving mine to become a stay-at-home mom, that soup-from-stones thriftiness helped to get us through. The ability of mine...
Portugal, My Heart
Colin and I arrived in Portugal today, beginning a journey that has a lot of meaning and is sort of like a new beginning to me. Having been born to parents who seemed to be searching for something in life that was beyond anything I understood, there were a lot of...
My Pastry Chef Dream
The day after The Farm Chicks Fairlast June, I was sitting through orientation for culinary school, about to embark on a longheld dream of mine to become a pastry chef that began taking shape when I was a little girl. In many ways, the timing wasn't great while we...
An Update on our Move
After we made the decision to move into the city, we put our house on the market. It was the weekend before The Farm Chicks Fair. After a couple of months, we accepted an offer and we began going through the long process of waiting for the buyer’s paperwork and...
Moving Away and Following Dreams
When we built our dream home, our beloved farmhouse, I never imagined I'd be saying the words that we're moving away, but it's true. We are leaving GreenBluff and moving into the city. Sometimes unexpected dreams develop and it's time to start a new life chapter....
At a Crossroads With Our Children Growing Up
I took a walk around Lost Lake while Colin was mountain biking. It was a good time for me to have some quiet time and think about life within our family right now. We're at such a crossroads - the kids are all growing up - Lucas will be moving far away for college,...
Why They Called Us Vagabonds
I found this article from my childhood family life recently. I enjoyed reading it and think it's a good look into my dad's mindset, especially: . . . . . . . . "Freedom," said Joaquin De La Luz, "is not all luxury." He should know. De La Luz, his wife Gypsy and their...
My Family – the 1970’s Nomads
I recently came across this clipping from my childhood days growing up in my family's gypsy wagon home on wheels my dad built by hand. This article came from the Daily Inter Lake Newspaper in Kalispell, Montana, one of the many places we traveled through during our...
The True Love Story of Floyd & Margaret
Today I made the drive out to Floyd and Margaret's, two unlikely friends I made while on a drive one afternoon about ten years ago with my parents. Over the years and after many visits to their farm, I grew to love and admire them and their endless love for one...
IT'S ME, SERENA!
I bounced through the first years of my life in a hippie gypsy wagon, hand-built by my father, wandering the back roads of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. My family eventually settled into a tiny cabin in the woods on property that was once inhabited by Native American Indians.
I spent my childhood days searching for arrowheads, teaching myself to sew on a treadle sewing machine and to bake in a wood-burning stove, with no running water, refrigeration, or electricity in our home. My family lived frugally and early on, inspired by my parent’s thriftiness and style, I gained a knack for thrifty creativity and turning ordinary objects into something useful. And I dreamed of the home I would create for my own family someday.
Now I’m married to my husband, Colin, and our children are all grown. After 24 years of producing The Farm Chicks Vintage & Handmade Fair, I'm spending time visiting other markets around the world. You can watch episodes of Serena Goes to Market here.
I share more about my life story from time to time, here on my blog. You can also find me on Instagram, and Facebook.
