Part of the magic of the holidays for me, is the time spent with loved ones, creating homemade treats and crafts. This Christmas cupcakes project is a fun and easy activity with children and although it’s structured, still allows them to let their own creativity shine through.

To make these Santa and Mrs. Clause cupcakes, you’ll need the following supplies:

  • Frosted cupcakes
  • Fondant cut into a hair shape for Mrs. Claus, and a cap and beard for Santa. (To create the shapes, sketch out patterns onto cardstock paper, cut out, place on rolled out fondant, and use a small sharp knife to simultaneously trace and cut out shapes). Allow fondant shapes to dry or at least semi-dry for easier handling for the children.
  • Buttercream tinted to colors for features and placed in piping bags for piping.

Have the frosted cupcakes, fondant shapes, and piping bags ready for the children to begin and prepare one of each cupcake style for an example for them to reference. And then it’s as simple as the children placing the fondant pieces, and piping the details in their own style. (It’s fun to see their unique choices for each cupcake!)

Tips:

  • Make buttercream as soft as possible (while keeping it just stiff enough to still hold its shape when piped) to make it easier for the children to squeeze from the piping bags.
  • To make buttercream bags kid-proof and trouble free, twist bags closed and use rubber bands to keep bags tightly closed.

IT'S ME, SERENA!

In 2002, I was dreaming of creating a fun and happy little event to sell my vintage and handmade goods. In 2002, I held my first event in my neighbor's barn along with a handful of friends. The sale became wildly popular and began attracting visitors from across the country and recognition in national magazines. Today The Farm Chicks Vintage & Handmade Fair fills the Spokane County Fairgrounds and features hundreds of creatively and carefully curated spaces packed with vintage and handmade goods. Many describe it as a bucket list event, magical, inspirational, and the best event of its kind in the USA. I describe it as the best weekend of the year!
